What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a paid job where someone learns a profession through a blend of practical, on-the-job experience and structured training. It's a recognised pathway that allows people to gain real skills, real responsibilities, and a nationally accredited qualification, all while earning a salary.

Apprenticeships are designed to develop talent in a way that's directly relevant to employers. Instead of learning in isolation, apprentices build capability in live environments, supported by experienced mentors and guided by a training provider.

💰 Earn while you learn

Apprentices are employees from day one, receiving a wage and the same rights as any other staff member.

🛠️ Real work, real skills

Most learning happens on the job, applying knowledge immediately in real situations.

📚 Structured training

A portion of time (typically 20%) is spent in guided learning delivered by an approved training provider.

🎓 Recognised qualifications

Apprenticeships lead to industry-standard certifications, from Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs) up to Level 7 (master's-level).

📈 Clear progression

Apprenticeships create pathways into long-term careers, further study, and professional accreditation.

Who apprenticeships are for

Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16+, whether they're:

  • Starting their career
  • Changing direction
  • Upskilling within their current role
  • Returning to work after a break

They're increasingly used by employers to develop future leaders, technical specialists, and diverse talent pipelines.

For candidates

  • All levels are paid, work-based routes - you earn a salary while training.

  • Higher and degree apprenticeships are a tuition-free alternative to university.

  • The four categories map roughly onto school and university qualifications, making it easy to judge whether you meet the bar for a given level.

  • Progression is designed to be linear: intermediate leads into advanced, which leads into higher and degree routes.
